Kayakers strike gold at Games

The second phase of the Western Canada Summer Games were in full swing Wednesday in Strathcona County, Alta., and medals were aplenty in the water.

In the canoe and kayak events, Saskatchewan managed to win two gold, a silver and a bronze.

The gold came courtesy of boys' 1,000-metre kayak foursome of Saskatoon's Albert Gerard, Matt Sinnett, Dylan Wall and Shylo Wollf. Also golden were the boys' 1,000m canoe team of Regina's Liam Abrams, Christopher Laplante, Iain McLeod and Riley Schnell.

Winning silver was the girls' 1,000m canoe foursome of Saskatoon's Jenna Berenbaum, Dana Demmings and Karena Weiler, along with Regina's Megan Gibson. Berenbaum also earned bronze in the 1000m kayak with Saskatonians Olivia Dycka and Lorilei Hitchings, and Regina's Ashley Holowatuk.

Athletic, and field events saw numerous Saskatchewan podium finishes.

Joel Senick claimed silver in the boys' 100m final with a time of 10.92 seconds. In the girls' 100m, three Saskatoon sprinters, Jenni Hucul, Erica Croteau and Sharai Siemens, all failed to qualify for the final.

Sean Fleming, and Nigel Sharp of Regina teamed up to win a gold and a bronze for their province in the 5000m. Fleming crossed the line with a time of 15:03, while Sharp finished in 15.23.26.

Not to be outdone, Jayne Grebinski of Regina and Kendra Schaaf went one-two on the podium in the 5,000m event. Grebinski clocked in at 17:00.28 and Schaaf at 17:25.93. Macklin's Danette Doetzel just missed out on a Saskatchewan sweep finishing in fourth.

In the 800m wheelchair events, Regina's Cory Harrower, and Kyle Shaw of Hazlet will come home toting gold after finishing first in girls' and boys' events, respectively.

Lindsay Kinnear of Lumsden claimed bronze in the women's 200. Special Olympics event with a time of 33.19. Pinehouse's Aaron Misponas just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish. Regina's Ian Jestadt leaped to a bronze in the triple jump.

Saskatchewan's girls' field hockey squad came up short in their first contest, falling 2-1 to Manitoba. Regina's Andrea Yeung scored the lone Saskatchewan goal.

On the pitch, the boys' rugby team had a busy schedule with three matches. They lost their first two games, 26-0 to Alberta and 31-5 to British Columbia, before posting a 22-12 triumph over Manitoba.

Volleyball action saw Saskatchewan's boys' team go 1-1 after a 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19) loss to British Columbia, and a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-7) win over Yukon.

The girls' squad lost 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-20) to Manitoba in their lone match of the day.

An official medal tally for Saskatchewan was not available Wednesday night.
