Sask. canoe/kayak team wins boatload of medals

Saskatchewan continued to win on wheels Friday, as two wheelchair athletes added to their loot at the Western Canada Summer Games in Strathcona County, Alta.

Kyle Shaw of Hazlet and Cory Harrower of Regina each collected their third medal of the Games, both winning gold in the 1,500 metres. Shaw won the boys race in three minutes, 53.88 seconds and Harrower took the girls event in 5:56.85.

Elizabeth Dubourt of Saskatoon threw her weight around and came out a silver medallist in hammer throw. She tossed 49.09m. Michelle Collman of Luseland was fourth and Sarah Klimm of Tisdale fifth.

Klimm clinched bronze in discus with a toss of 35.20m. Vollman placed fifth.

Special Olympian Linsday Kinnear of Lumsden won silver in long jump (3.42m) and 100m (15.99). Saskatoon's Amee Harrison earned bronze in the 100m in 16.57.

In other action at the track, Regina's Julia Hart won bronze in the girls 800 metres in 2:15.64. Kailey Smith of Moose Jaw placed fourth.

Darren Mazzei of Regina won gold in the boys 800 in 1:53.22.

Paradise Hill's Brent Trefiak won bronze in decathlon with 5,005 points. Yorkton's Keegan Sharp was fourth.

Earlier, Leah Vause of Saskatoon won bronze in the pole vault, clearing 3.80m.

On the diamond, Saskatchewan's baseball unit won bronze, topping Manitoba 4-2.

The boys' kayak/canoe team won four gold, three silver and two bronze. Shylo Wolf, Dylan Wall, Albert Gerrard and Matt Sinnett, all of Saskatoon, and Riley Schnell, Iain McLeod, Liam Abrams and Christopher Laplante of Regina shared in the haul.

In the girls division, Saskatoon's Karena Weiler and Jenna Berenbaum and Regina's Megan Gibson and Ashley Holowatuk earned one gold, two silver and two bronze.

The boys and girls teams combined to collect a silver in 500m 15-person mixed canoe.

Saskatchewan's fell to Manitoba 5-2 in the bronze-medal game in field hockey.

Both the boys and girls volleyball teams played in the bronze medal matches Friday night. Results were unavailable at press time.

On the wrestling mat, the girls won gold in the team event, while the boys earned bronze.
