Gerard, Wollf win gold in kayak

Published: Monday, August 27, 2007Athletes from the Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club won six medals at the Canadian canoe and kayak sprint championships in Ottawa during the weekend.
Albert Gerard and Shylo Wollf won gold in the midget K-2 1,000 metres, Trista Neilly won silver in both the juvenile K-1 500 and 1,000 and Jonathan Mayo won silver in the midget K-1 1,000.
Bronze medallists were Nick Humniski, Dylan Wall, Gerard and Wollf in the midget K-4 1,000 and Jenna Berenbaum and Lorilee Hitchings in juvenile C-2 500.
Karena Weiler, Megan Gibson, Ron Demmings, Brooke Brinsky and Neal Feuse qualified for A final races, but did not finish in the medals.
The Burloak Canoe Club from Oakville, Ont., won the club title with 769 points.
The Mississauga, Ont., Canoe Club was second with 472 points, while the Cheema Canoe Club of Waverley, N.S., placed third with 428.
Burloak was formed in 1989. The club is led by Olympian and world champion Adam van Koeverden who won six gold medals, a silver and a bronze at nationals.
"It stems from our international base program," said van Koeverden, 25.
"We're focused on winning the world championships and the Olympic Games, and all that focus boils down to a very intense club program. We have a strong base at Burloak, a history of international success, and our younger generation is just starting to come up and feel that success."
The 2008 Canadian championships will be held in Dartmouth, N.S.
